Pre-departure Preparation: Check list

Well it's about that time to prepare for the list minute things that are NECESSARY for maintain safety in your overseas travel! Here are a list of things every (Canadian) should do before travelling overseas.



1. Read the travel report for your travel destination www.voyage.gc.ca

2. Register with the Canadian Government Office for Canadians abroad.  http://www.voyage.gc.ca/about_a-propos/role-eng.asp

3. Give the host school your travel information, in case they do pick up service. Also just to let them know when you plan on arriving and making sure you arrive okay.

4. Check the requirements for:
- transformer or power converters (converts a voltage from one value to another;;)
                                                - plug adapters (outlet configurations)

5. Give your friends & family your contact information inside the country & also the address of where you are staying

 6. RESEARCH the political, cultural, economic situation, risk assessment, weather, climate, food, cultural norms, dress, religion, customs & laws!

7. Ensure that your passport is up to date and valid for ATLEAST 6 months after your scheduled return date to Canada

8. Make sure you carry a copy of your passport & other important documents also both sides of cards (credit cards, government issued ID's)

9. Contact MSI ( Or the health provider of your home province...) and notify them of your travel plans. The international office at your home university should prepare a letter for you to send to MSI

10.Call your credit card company and inform them of your travel plans and ask if your card is widely accepted in that country and the fees that apply

11. LEARN HOW TO DO ONLINE BANKING. Best if you connect it to your parents account ( My credit card/debit account is both hooked up to my parents so I can transfer money and vice versa)

12. Clear any debts you owe to your home university

13. Get extra passport photos in case

14. Bring your home university materiels ( T-shirts, brochures, etc) In case they have a exchange fair at the university and to promote your university!

15. When you return RIGHT AWAY email your international office at your home university and tell them that you have returned! Also, book a debriefing session with the university to talk about your experience. Also, send them photos and stories!

16. FINALLY volunteer to promote international programs at your university ;D
